I was looking for a sound engineering course on
the Internet and began using
the search engine google. The top site that repeatedly came up
was a
sponsored link to a course at the recording workshop.
There were certain criteria I needed fulfilling, such as advanced
production,
and synthesiser programming. The syllabus on offer far exceeded
any
expectation I had and I was eager to enrol immediately.
My main goal during the course was to achieve a sense of control
(production-wise), so that I would be better able to transfer my
ideas from
my head to the computer. My initial impression upon visiting the
recording workshop was complete amazement. Pretty much all the
equipment
required to teach the basics of sound engineering and beyond were
available.
A ten-minute talk with the teacher (Jose Gross) made it blatantly
obvious
that he was very experienced. I handed a deposit and began
shortly
afterwards.
The course structure was ideal. It began with an initial
foundation course
in the basics of sound engineering. This lasted about eight weeks.
The next
sixteen weeks were divided into modules that would go into more
depth in
each area discussed in the foundation course. There was also time
during
this period expertise on the sequencer programmes you would have
started
using. An opportunity to shadow Jose Gross working with clients
in an
Engineer/producer context is available and is recommended.
Without going into too much individual detail of what I learned
during the
course, all I can say is that, my expectations of the depth of
the course
were far exceeded.
Finally I feel now at the end of my course, I have gained the
control in
music production that I had sought for so long.
Thank you Jose Gross
