The Part Time Diploma Course

The TRW Sound Engineering & Music Production Diploma full time course lasts 1 academic year (3 terms). This is the equivalent of all the TRW part time audio & sound engineering courses and music technology & music production courses with additional practical periods amounting to 16 hours per week or more (40 hours/week) if you want.
There is an additional advanced course which when combined with the diploma course lasts 2 academic years.
There is also an abbreviated version of the standard course without part 3 which lasts 6 months and is particularly suited to overseas students needing visas. more...

This course is designed to prepare students to be able to work in the recording industry. Like the part time courses the emphasis is on practical work.

Graduates from this course have just recently worked with members & ex members of the Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, AC/DC and David Bowie's band!

At the end of the course students will be assessed for the TRW Music Technology & Sound Engineering Diploma. This will be based not only on the quality of the work presented and also on the attitude of the students.
The recording industry does not fit into the mould of other industries. The hours are erratic and can be very long, the general environment tends to be unorthodox and stress levels can get high. The ability to work in a team is essential. Motivation, drive, enthusiasm, flexibility and reliability are paramount.

UK residents who successfully achieve the diploma will then be found placements in studios for work experience.

The course is in 3 parts:

Part 1 (8 weeks): The 1st course on Tuesdays 14:00 to 17:00.
Practical periods: Wednesdays 11:00 to 17:00 + Thursdays or Fridays. 11:00 to 17:00.

During part 1 some of the practical sessions consist of assisting in actual recording sessions with a tutor to gain a better understanding and experience of the requirements of a studio engineer. As this is also a working recording studio the times and days of the practical sessions may occasionally change at short notice just as they would do in any other professional recording studio therefore a certain amount of flexibility is necessary from the students.

Part 2 (16 weeks) of the sound engineering & music technology course is made up of Monday classes 11:00 to 16:30, Tuesday classes 11:00 to 13:30 and a minimum of 2 x bookable 4 hour weekday practical sessions.

Part 3 (8 weeks): Final period to finish your projects. No more classes but access to the main studio as well as the individual workstations as well as necessary individual tuition. Final interview and assessment.

One of the most important features is that there are only 4 to 5 people per course. Other schools, colleges or courses have somewhere between 10 and 30 people per course. "I have taught in further education colleges and it was a nightmare. There were about 25 students trying to get access to the mixing desk. The class was also held back by some students who were there because they could not think of anything better to do. They were not really interested which brought the whole class down..." says Jose Gross the founder of The Recording Workshop. "I like the personal approach. Small classes, lots of practice on the equipment. Exchange of ideas between people. I am still learning even now from my students because they have unprejudiced ideas about how to do things which I am always struggling with myself."

In the sound engineering course you learn how to mike drum kits like this one.

Another distinguishing feature of The Recording Workshop is that it is located slap bang in the middle of one of the most densely populated recording studio areas in the world. There are something like 50 recording studios in about 3 blocks of buildings! A lot of them belong to world class acts. One is frequently seeing famous faces in the nearby cafe or just walking down the corridor in this building or down the street. This makes it ideal for making contacts and work opportunities.

Sound engineering and music technology cross over a lot. control surfaces like this one enable you to mix your track with a computer. Working with live instruments such as guitars is an important part of the sound engineering course

At the end of the course the work will be assessed for the TRW Music Technology & Sound Engineering Diploma. EU residents who meet the requirements will then be found placements in studios for work experience.
